Show us results of probe, PB tells marine inquiry

THE Cebu Provincial Board (PB) yesterday asked the Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) to publicize the result of its investigation on the sinking of mv Princess of the Stars.

Cebu PB Member Victor Maambong, who sponsored the resolution, said it is important that the public must be informed of the cause of the tragedy to make sure it is seaworthy once again.

Safety

Maambong also said ship operators and owners have duties to ensure the safety of their passengers.

Rep. Antonio Cuenco, (Cebu, south district) said last Monday that although BMI finished its report last month, it has yet to publicize the document.

Cuenco said he will ask Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza to show the House of Representatives the findings of the MBI.

Cuenco said he will support the call to revoke franchises of Suplicio Lines Inc. if the BMI report shows the Princess of the Stars tragedy last June 21 was caused by the shipping firm’s negligence.

Cuenco found it very strange that until now the BMI has yet to release its report when it already wrapped up its probe a month ago.

Cuenco said there may be some “massaging” of the report by the owners and management of the shipping firm. (GMD)
