Thursday, August 14, 2008 Fight stalled on purse split
THE dream fight between the legendary “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya and Filipino boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is now almost a done deal and the only issue left to be settled is the purse split.
Both camps have already agreed the match should be at 147 pounds and both fighters will use eight ounce gloves. The only thing that De La Hoya and Pacquiao’s camp haven’t agreed upon is the split of the revenue.
De La Hoya wants a 70-30 split while Pacquiao desires the split to be 60-40.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has already talked with De La Hoya last weekend and conveyed the terms to Top Rank big boss Bob Arum.
“Now, it’s up to Pacquiao if he wants to do it or not,” said Schaefer in a report by the Los Angeles Times.
Schaefer did not reveal how much they gave in to Pacquiao’s request but said that it will be his biggest pay ever.
“We gave in a bit on the last round of negotiations,” told Schaefer. “This time around, we’re not willing to make any further concessions.”
On the other hand, the World Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation lightweight king Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell feels that the match up is absurd.
“This Oscar-Pacquiao fight is a complete travesty,” Campbell told Boxing Confidential. “It should be against the law, really.”
The champion doesn’t believe that the 29-year-old Gen. Santos native will stand a chance to a bigger De La Hoya. (EKA)
