Ex-Banilad councilor nabbed over firearms

A FORMER barangay councilor in Banilad, Cebu City was arrested after a team of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 operatives allegedly seized assorted firearms in a raid in his house yesterday morning.

Supt. Rex Derilo, who led the team, said the raid was initiated after the CIDG 7 received information that Anecito B. Ocampo, 59, has been seen in Banilad reportedly brandishing a .45 pistol.

The raid at 7:30 a.m. yielded one Carbine caliber 30 M2 rifle, .22 Winchester rifle, one .357 power custom revolver, a Colt .45 pistol and one 9-mm Norinco pistol. Assorted pieces of ammunition and magazine were also recovered by the police.

Regional Trial Court Judge Geraldine Faith Econg issued the search warrant against Ocampo.

Documents

Derilo said Ocampo failed to present documents that allowed him to legally own and carry the firearms. He presented documents for the 9-mm pistol but these were expired, he said.

Ocampo, who claimed he is presently employed as a utility worker at the Cebu City Hall, said that of the five firearms reportedly recovered from him only the 9-mm pistol and the .45 pistol belong to him.

He said the other firearms were taken from the ground floor of the house.

Frame-up

Ocampo believes he is a victim of a frame-up in relation to the murder case filed against his son Ronald, alias Onad.

Ronald is facing a murder case for allegedly killing fireman Wenceslao Opone in August 2007. A warrant of arrest has been issued against him.

Ocampo said that after the incident, he is no longer aware of his son’s whereabouts.

Derilo said charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition will be filed against Ocampo. (JST)
