Usual champ UV shows old form

SEVEN-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers are slowly gaining back momentum that had won them all those titles as they pulled off a lopsided 92-57 win over the Southwestern University (SWU) Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Green Lancers have derailed from their bid for an unprecedented eight straight championships, when it received a huge bashing in their opening match.

However, they are slowly getting back on track registering their third straight victory for this season.

Attackers

The UV squad saw the return of its top three attackers, Von Lañete, Ritchum Dennison and Chris Diputado into the UV’s frontlines and announced their comeback in style as the helped pull of this season’s most lopsided win in the collegiate basketball.

The three were not able to play together in their past games after taking turns nursing either chicken pox or injuries.

Lead

The Lancers banked on a strong 23-point lead at the first half, a lead that they maintained up to the final buzzer. Celebrated center Greg Slaughter powered the Lancers’ inside shooting posting 19 points for the team.

Diputado, who skipped their last game because of knee injury became UV’s go-to guy on the outside peppering UV’s perimeter offensive.

Diputado, Lañete and Dennison combined for 29 points, for UV to claim its third win in four outings, as SWU dropped with a 2-2 win-loss record.

It was by far the Cobras worst performance in the league scoring just 22 of their 80 field goals and converting just 11 of their 24 possible points from the free throw area.

UV (92)—Slaughter 19, Lao 16, Dennison 12, Lanete 11, Lasala 8, Villanil 7, Diputado 6, Cincoflores 5, Sendrijas 4, Benedicto 4 SWU (57)—Belande 10, Armecin 10, Diango 8, Maguate 8, Nunez 7, Jalandoni 6, Poligrates 6, Escober 3, Pacquiao 1. (MCB)
