119 typhoon victims in Talisay get 10-day jobs

A TOTAL of 119 Talisaynons displaced by typhoon Frank last June will get a chance to work in a government-assisted employment program to at least offset for their lost income.

The Talisay City Government said the residents will work for 10 days in their respective barangays of Poblacion, Tanke, Dumlog and Cansojong.

Development

They underwent proper screening by the City Social Welfare and Development office before they were accepted in the program.

The City Hall assigned the residents to unclog creeks and man-made canals starting next week, under the supervision of Engr. Audie Bacasmas of the City Engineering Office.

The temporary job is part of the Department of Labor and Employment’s (Dole) Emergency Employment Assistance for the typhoon’s victims.

The Dole already gave City Hall a check worth P190,000. The City Government will provide a counterpart fund for the workers’ salaries.

Finance

Talisay was among the Cebu local government units (LGUs) that received financial grants from Dole for typhoon Frank victims.

The other LGUs were Bogo City, which got 100,000; Daanbantayan, P240,000; Medellin, P240,000; Madridejos, P140,000; and San Remigio, P90,000.

Frank spawned huge waves and ruined several houses in Talisay’s coastline last June.

The storm was also responsible for the sinking of Sulpicio Lines’ mv Princess of Stars off Romblon Island.

More than 800 perished in that tragedy, which authorities considered the world’s second worst peacetime maritime disaster. (GC)
