Festival about Visayas arts slated for February

THE Visayas Regional Development Committee (RDCom) has approved a resolution seeking to establish the first annual “One Visayas Arts Month Festival.”

Antique Gov. Salvacion Perez, who moved for the formation of the festival, said the event will unite the Visayas regions by promoting an appreciation of arts, culture and heritage.

RDCom officials agreed in principle on the festival during their quarterly meeting at the Iloilo Business Hotel last Aug. 13.

The arts festival will be held in February. The RDCom representatives will meet with Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia next week to finalize the program.

Garcia pointed out that she included in her 12-point agenda the creation of a provincial heritage council when her first term started in 2004.

“I found out that once we got the people to be aware of their heritage and to appreciate our culture, it became a unifying culture,” said Garcia.

The “One Visayas Arts Festival” will first take place in the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

The governor said the RDCom is about to gain momentum not just in infrastructure but also in human resources, and added that she is confident of getting the support of all mayors in Cebu Province.

“When we were able to unite the people, we also instilled in their minds the sense of pride and this pride turns into a passion that pushes the people to achieve greater heights of progress and development,” said Garcia. (GMD)
