USJ-R makes it 5-for-5 in Cesafi

THE University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars have boosted their chances to make it back to the finals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) after posting a 73-66 win over the Southwestern University Cobras, 73-66, Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

However, their feat may just be a hindsight as the limelight shifts focus on the exciting matchup slated today.

The battle of two giants, 6-foot-11 Greg Slaughter of University of the Visayas and 6-foot-7 Junmar Fajardo of University of Cebu, is considered the most expected face-off for this season and is expected to draw crowds at the Cebu Coliseum.

Both players have been with their respective schools for more than a year already, but fate had never allowed the two to meet ways. After weeks of sizing each other up, the two will finally come face to face in today’s 6 p.m. main offering.

Slaughter will be coming to today’s game with more confidence having been named the Player of the Week after amassing 55 statistical points earned last week. He led the team to winning against three teams.

Meanwhile, in last Sunday’s game at the Cebu Coliseum, the Cobras and Jaguars figured in a tight fight in the first period before the SWU squad eventually fizzled out.

SWU actually set the pace, leading by five at the end of the first period. The run was however put to a screeching halt by Armand Ponce, who initiated a fierce rally in the second period, for the Jaguars to wrest away the lead, 32-29 for good.

The Jaguars now sport an unblemished 5-0 record, to solidify its leadership in the league. The Cobras absorbed their third loss in four games.

Jan Malinao led USJ-R with 17 points, while Luther Justiniani, Cesafi’s first player of the week awardee scored 14 points.

In the other game, Fajardo, who topscored with 13, led UC to an 83-66 win over Don Bosco College Greywolves.

UC improves with a 2-1 record, while DBC suffered its third loss against just one win. (MCB)
