Wednesday, August 20, 2008 UV invests on new crime lab, HRM simulation hotel
TO boost its curricular program, the University of the Visayas (UV) invested and capitalized on top-graded facilities such as its crime laboratory and hotel and restaurant simulation hotel.
“What we are doing now is in line with the university’s thrust to improve and develop,” said Joselito Gullas, executive vice president for finance.
UV, also reputed for its Criminology program, installed a complete, advanced and accredited crime laboratory.
The laboratory’s primary function is the scientific examination of physical evidence of criminal cases. It will be utilized by Criminology students to familiarize them with standard and modern criminal laboratory.
Gullas said that the university is looking forward to work with security enforcing agencies like the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation.
“They can use our facility for a minimum fee,” Gullas said. Doing so, Gullas said, UV will help in prosecution of crimes and strengthening of safety and security of the immediate community.
The laboratory will include the following branches: Forensic Ballistics or Firearm Identification, Dactyloscopy or Fingerprint Identification, Questioned Document (for forgeries), Polygraphy or Lie Detection, Photography, Forensic Chemistry and Legal Medicine.
Simulation hotel
UV recently completed its Hotel and Restaurant Management facility worth approximately P9 million. The facility includes fully furnished and equipped simulation hotel rooms, hotel lobby, banquet hall, restaurant and kitchen.
Its hotel rooms recreate standard, suite and cruise ship cabin rooms. The banquet hall can accommodate 200 people.
“The university is eager to invest in these facility so that our students will see what they are expected to see when they out of the university to work and apply what they’ve learned,” said Grisile Babon, HRM department head.
UV’s HRM program was accredited by the Commission on Higher Education in the year 2000. Currently, it partners with hospitality agencies in Singapore and the United States to make its students globally competitive.
Moreover, Gullas said that UV is poised to continue improving its facility and curriculum maintaining its tradition for academic leadership as the first university in Cebu.
“We do not look at other schools as competition. The sun shines for everybody. What we are focused on is to improve on the existing programs that we have.” (JSC)
