Wednesday, August 20, 2008 Speak out: Case against Carlo By F. Flores
THE case filed against Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna was reported in the newspapers in time for his arrival from the US.
He was chosen to represent the Philippines and the Filipino people in the International Visitors Leadership Program of World Leaders in Washington D.C. sponsored by the US Government.
I think it was just coincidental, but most important is the question of what wrong or harm Carlo defending his father before the Sandiganbayan did.
Looking at the moral angle of the case, Carlo being a good a son to a good father is worthy of praise.
There are many children that, in time of need, defend their parents even at the expense of their own lives.
We love our parents very much.
Lawyer Vic Biano said on air that an associate justice told Carlo, “no problem because you became a lawyer because of the support of your father.”
On the political side, I have not heard or read in the newspaper that Mayor Jonas Cortes and Carlo criticized personally each other.
I think their relationship is fine.
I attended the commemoration of A.S. Fortuna Day last May 3, 2008.
When former councilor Tex Fortuna gave the response, he thanked Mayor Jonas for the continued honoring of his father.
He even said that the Cortes and the Fortuna families have good relation.
He mentioned that when his son Dexter was baptized in 1974, it was the late mayor Boy Cortes who acted as the godfather together with then vice mayor Pedong Ouano.
When Dexter married in 2006, then councilor Jonas Cortes and Mayor Teddy Ouano were the sponsors.
When Tex daughter Gay married in that colorful military wedding, Tessie Cortes Vasquez, a military nurse and sister of Jonas, was one of the sponsors, together with some generals.
Tessie’s daughter Jicjic is very close to Gay that they are like sisters.
In the State of the City Address of Mayor Jonas, he said he will work hard to harmonize the executive and legislative branches.
I hope he will succeed for the benefit of Mandaue, since there are only two councilors who are hard to get.
As far as Carlo is concerned, there is no problem because he is not a politician and he is a straight man.
His only concern is what is right and wrong.
He does not care about partisanship and is legalist.
