Talisay to ban sale of bottle petroleum products

FOR public safety, a legislator is taking steps to ban retailers of petroleum products in bottles in Talisay City.

Councilor Edward Alesna said the selling of bottled fuel at retail stores is prohibited under circular letter 2003-11-010 of the Department of Energy (DOE).

He said the DOE only allows the selling of petroleum products at an authorized gasoline stations.

Alesna is the committee chairman on laws of the City Council.

He came up with the move following complaints of commuters that tricycle drivers smoke and throw lighted cigarettes while refueling at a gas retailing store.

Also, Alesna found out that the City Hall has no existing ordinance prohibiting the sale of bottled petroleum products from an unauthorized retail store.

At least six retail outlets are reportedly displaying their wares near the Tabunok Public Market.

This places market-goers, passengers and vendors to risk, he said.

“Especially at night, we have no control over these stores. I’m afraid it might trigger a fire in the area,” he said.

The rest of these bottled fuel retailers are reportedly operating in Barangays San Isidro, Cansojong, Pooc and San Roque near the corner of the Cebu South Road Coastal Road.

Alesna said he already advised these retailers to shift to another livelihood, as he will file an ordinance next week prohibiting such a business.

Once the City Council approves it on first reading, a public hearing will follow, he said. (GC)
