Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Speak out: Alternative learning system By Albina cordova
OVER the years, educating the illiterates, out-of-school youths and unproductive individuals has been the advocacy of government.
How can progress be attained with a noticeable number of unproductive people in the community?
For several years now, the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in Consolacion has played a vital role in augmenting the quality of life of the people in the community.
Consolacion alone has alternative out of school youths and out of school adults.
Non-formal education institutions started operating in this district, little by little.
Life over the shadow of ignorance started kindling up, giving hope for those people who thought of themselves as helpless, less privileged and liabilities not only of the community but also of the country.
This drop of hope was heightened with the extensive and more serious implementation of the programs and projects of the Bureau of Alternative Learning System (BALS).
With the joint effort exerted by local government units, ALS coordinators and the teachers, things are much different, and life is easier.
This program has successfully graduated illiterates, accelerated five pupils in elementary, two students in high school and 15 adult employees.
This year, about 65 per cent of the adults graduated from cum-livelihood program with a certificate accredited by Tesda.
Most of them are working in different companies, some are out of the country and others are running their own small business.
The best thing about this program is that everyone is involved and committed in making a difference in the lives of others.
It implies that no matter what is your status in the society, if we will just support and help one another, if we trust each other, then everybody will live in harmony and prosperity.
If one feels for each other, then this is the best place you could ever be.
