Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Cesafi flexes rules, sanctions 5 players
WITH the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation’s stringent enactment of policies, five players were handed a season-long suspension for having violated Cesafi rules.
Apparently, a ‘concerned fan’ called up a Cesafi official to tell him about five players of the Southwestern University, who reportedly played in another tournament in Danao, which is a big no-no if the event is within the Cesafi season.
This compelled Cesafi to make an investigation on Eluid Poligrates, Eleazar Armecin and Richard Kwong and forwards Eric Zanoria and Janno Nuñez. The budding upcomers, who have shown definite potential in their past games may just have cut their season, and possibly their collegiate basketball career short, after having been found guilty.
Vengeance
Crippled by the loss of some of their main protagonists, the SWU Cobras still pulled themselves together as they clobbered the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 82-59, in last Monday’s game at the Cebu Coliseum.
SWU leaned on Alfred Belande, Arrd Diango and Clifford Maguate, who had to double their efforts so as not feel the loss of their comrades.
SWU still managed to eke out a victory that kept alive their hopes to stay in contention for the Top 4 spot. Belande, Diango and Maguate started a searing first quarter run to lead 23-11 in the first period, which the Panthers never recovered from.
Rebound
After an anemic performance in their last game against University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), Belande stepped up and scored 23 points for the Cobras with three rebounds, three assists and five steals, while Maguate had 14 points, two steals and two blocks. Diango posted 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists topped off with two steals for SWU to claim its second win in five games.
The USJ-R Jaguars, on the other hand, continue to dominate the league as it claimed its sixth straight victory via a 79-71 win over the Don Bosco Greywolves in Monday’s other game. (MCB)5.
