Guv warns brys: maintain projects or lose assistance

CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday warned barangay officials they risk losing Capitol’s financial assistance if they fail to maintain Provincial Government projects implemented in their area.

Garcia asked bara-ngay officials to clean up clogged drainages near roads concreted by the Provincial Government.

Garcia said she would not release financial assistance to barangays unless the road drainages are cleaned up.

“No maintenance of road drainage, no release of financial assistance,” Garcia told barangay captains.

More than a thousand barangay captains from Cebu Province gathered in the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) for a general assembly called for by Garcia.

The village officials came before 10 a.m. on board mini-buses and public utility vehicles.

Projects

For close to two hours, the village chiefs listened to Garcia and other Capitol officials talk about various infrastructure projects implemented in the different barangays by the Capitol.

The governor told village chiefs the general assembly was held to update them on projects implemented in their barangays and whether these are well-maintained.

Garcia said the assembly was also to give the public an idea that her administration is extending assistance to both her allies and critics.

Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr., Rep. Pablo John Garcia (Cebu, 3rd district), several Provincial Board members, town mayors and vice mayors attended the assembly.

Garcia said she took pride in the report that the Provincial Government paved about 60 kilometers of barangay roads.

Request

She also reminded barangay captain Capitol allows each village to request financial assistance of not more than P30,000.

It was learned yesterday that at least 10 barangays asked for more than P30,000 as financial assistance for various infrastructure projects in their locality.

Garcia also told the barangay chiefs she will not approve barangay resolutions asking for financial assistance for the construction or rehabilitation of covered courts.
Garcia said the Capitol will only approve priority development projects in the Province.

She also said the Capitol limits each village to only three resolutions for financial assistance. This was decided since the Provincial Government cannot accommodate all resolutions from villages, she said.

The governor also asked barangays captains and councilmen to avail themselves of the Government Service Insurance System group insurance. (GMD)
