Lapu asks DepEd to suspend classes

TO honor a parish annual fiesta, the Department of Education (DepEd) is being asked by the Lapu-Lapu City Council to suspend the classes in both high school and elementary in four barangays on Sept. 8 to allow the participation of the teachers and students in civic and religious activities.

Councilor Damian Gomez said the four barangays are clustered as one district and are served by Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, whose feast is the second largest after the city’s patron saint Virgin of the Rule on Nov. 20.

Other members of the council questioned the wide coverage of the class suspension, but Gomez said it was done three times before without objections from DepEd officials.

“For three consecutive years, we had this done and I don’t think DepEd will object now,” he said. The suspension covers Barangays Marigondon, Suba-Basbas, Basak and Agus.

The resolution also informs DepEd when to hold a make-up class.

Religious and civic activities have long earned prestige among foreign and local tourists who are living in the city, being so organized and with cultural shows participated in by students and teachers of the different schools. (AIV)
