Friday, August 29, 2008 Cavan steers Cebu to sweep Liga quarterfinals
GERRY Cavan shot perfect from the field to lead the M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños in sweeping the Trace Laguna Stallions following an 82-71 win in Game 3 of the best-of-five quarterfinal series of the 2008 Liga Pilipinas Smart Playoffs held at the Trace College Gym in Los Baños, Laguna, Wednesday evening.
Cavan made 5-of-5 attempts including 2-of-2 from the three point area to lead Cebu scorers with 15 points in his 13 minutes of playtime inside the court.
Cavan, who is the first-ever MVP of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc., during his collegiate days with the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats days, wrapped up his performance with two rebounds, one assist and two steals, for him to be named best player of the game.
Marlon Basco added 14 points, while Ron Capati and Woodrow Enriquez finished with 10 markers each as Cebu went on a surprising 53 percent (31-of-58) field goal shooting.
Cebu again outrebounded the Stallions, 41-32, and dominated their opponents in the assists 15-8.
Abby Santos and Jerwin Gaco scored 15 points each for the losing Stallions.
Cebu’s semifinal opponent will be the winner between Pampanga Buddies and Lipa/Batangas Barakos in the other
quarterfinal series.
The No.5 seed Lipa Batangas defeated Pampanga, 99-91, in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead. Batangas is looking to close the series at home as of press time last night. (RCM)
