Talk back: Mayor Fernandez’s son
By Roger Cadag

(THE following letters are addressed to Sun.Star columnist Bobby Nalzaro)

This has reference to your column in Sun.Star about Joavan Fernandez.

I couldn't agree more on what you've said, but I would like to add something.

The honorable mayor is a man of the law and is responsible for the welfare of his constituents.

Among those responsibilities is their safety.

A string of incidents linked to Joavan has happened in just a period of four weeks.

These involved bodily harm and harassment of the victims and their families.

Can the mayor allow more of these to happen?

Where is his sense of responsibility?

Every opinion piece in the local papers portrays the mayor as the victim.

But what about the parents of his son's victims?

So what if the mayor is a good man, but his son isn't.

I am more worried of his son's victims and the safety of their families.

Many Talisaynons couldn't care less if Joavan is locked up in jail or is shot by vigilantes---that could only mean a safer community for them.

What about the Talisay police?

It is evident that Joavan did not make any effort to hide from the authorities.

He visits the police station and talks to barangay officials.

Is this how inferior the police leadership is in this city?

What is Police Regional Office Chief Ronald Roderos doing?

Investigation?

For how long?

Until it is too late?--Joey Gonzales, senior electrical engineer, Blackwood Partnership-Consulting Engineers Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

This is in response to your article about the son of Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez.

I don't want to pretend to know the feeling of the mayor or say that if I were in his shoe I would act differently.

It's just that I have read many horror stories about his son that it is beginning to worry me.

One bad story can be glossed over, but two bad stories can either be a fabrication or just mere coincidence.

I don't think reporters can be that stupid to concoct these.

I just don't get it.

How can the mayor still think that his son is innocent of all these allegations?

I know, he is innocent until proven guilty.

But people are afraid of the rich and powerful.

The rich and the powerful are not afraid of the law, and are immune from the law.

From what I read, the police in Talisay are not making a serious attempt to put the mayor's son in jail.

If I were caught violating traffic in Talisay, it would really get into me if I were jailed when a suspect for mauling, grave threat, and now kidnapping has not even been brought to the police station for scolding.

Pero lisod sad, uy.

Tungod kay hadlok ang mga tawo sa anak ni mayor, dili na sila mopasaka og sumbong.

Why are the people afraid of the mayor’s son?

Is he the devil incarnate?

From what I have gathered from the papers and from stories, Mayor Soc is a good man.

He is trying to be a good father but as a public servant he should balance his act.

What are the people close to the mayor doing or saying?

What information are they feeding him that made him this blind?

Is he in denial?

Is his son a tragic victim of media hype?—Roger Cadag
