Two empty bottles
By Noemi C. Fetalvero

MAN'S effort to recreate our world must be an attempt to control our own destiny.

New invention catapulted the world into a culture of instant gratification. The experimentation on human cells, cloning, and freezing of embryos are gigantic breakthroughs by the scientific world that has put Science and Religion clashing on issues.

Pope John Paul II, in his encyclical teaching, pointed out: “No world figure seemed able to put the process of modernization into the context of spirituality.”

The endless make-over sometimes runs counter to nature so that a catastrophic outcome becomes irreversible.

We try to control everything, notwithstanding the procedure. We end up messing our environment, our bodies, and the cycle of life. Innovation has overcome mankind so that man no longer knows what to do with the effects of instant gratification.

Our compulsion and infinite hunger for material things can be attributed to our addiction primarily to machines.

Every single invention or reinvention stemmed from a man’s ingenuity. Man can explore space but he cannot alter the speed upon which the solar system operates.

This reality check should be enough reason to dampen man’s pride. As Yanni, the Greek composer, puts it: “Everything great that happened to humanity all started with someone’s single thought. And since we are all created the same, everyone is capable of such a thought, of such an idea.”

This gift from above by the grace of God can only serve mankind when put to good use.

On the other hand, if this inventor’s creation falls into the hands of the wicked, it can be a man’s downfall. Technological advancement, scientific findings, and medical breakthroughs can no doubt save lives. The result of his creativeness is at our disposal.

If we were to be given two empty bottles, what do you think will we fill it with? Depending on our orientation and motivation in life, we will respond in thousand different ways.

We can opt to fill these bottles with the stuff that can serve humanity with the end purpose of using them to better the lives of the people we encounter. Or we can opt to be nonchalant about the direction upon which our earthly life is headed.

The two empty bottles will be our vessels of hope and we will fill it with choices, not options.

Choices are from within and that is what matters most.

I will be sharing personal and anecdotal experiences in the coming days, and we will find magic in these two empty bottles.
