Utzurrum: Airline affairs
By Chinggay V. Utzurrum
The scene

ONGOING at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel (MPPH) is the culinary journey, Sabores de España, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 14.

Gema Luisa Pido, culinary director of the Gustavian and F&B consultant of Casino Español de Cebu, brings out her treasured family recipes, such as paella, lengua estofada, cocidos, rellenos, croquettas, etc. during the international buffet at Café Marco. El Viento restaurant and pool bar will be offering Spanish delicacies ala carte, while a fine selection of authentic Spanish tapas will be served at the Lobby Lounge.

To make your dining mood totally Spanish, performing nightly until Sept. 4 are Madrid-based international guitarist Adolfo Timuat and partner Jessie Santos, who will bring the fire and grace of the sensual Spanish dance, the Flamenco.

MPPH is grateful to the following: Honorary Spanish Consulate in Cebu, Amigos de España and Cebu Pacific Air Inc.

For those who still don’t know Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, she is the foundress of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM).

Ignacia, daughter of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, was born in 1663 in Binondo, Manila, dat a turbulent age when Christianity had barely taken root in the hearts and lives of Filipinos. Given this difficult situation, Ignacia, with dogged determination and a spirit of generosity and trust in Divine Providence, still managed to found this group of women, whose extraordinary and exemplary life of prayer, inspired other women to follow their call.

After leading more than 70 RVM communities here and abroad, Ignacia died on Sept. 10, 1748.

To commemorate her death anniversary, the RVM Sisters are celebrating two Holy Masses. One on Sept. 9 at 8:45 a.m. at the Santo Rosario church on P. del Rosario St. and another on the anniversary itself, Sept. 10 at 8:45 a.m.

The public is cordially invited to perpetuate her memory.

That was quite a romantic setting that Northwest Airlines, (NWA) chose when they awarded their Top Producers for 2007. It is none other than that exclusive dining enclave, Abaca Boutique Resort and Restaurant in Mactan.

The moon cast a silvery sheen on the infinity pool and beach waters, as the NWA/ITI personnel, joined by the Cebu Staff, and 10 awardees from Visayas and Mindanao, enjoyed a gastronomic feast, prepared by the chef and proprietor, Jason Hyatt, no less!

Three tents, Arabian-style, provided a sense of privacy and intimacy, during the dinner and to enhance the ambience a violin duo provided music for the soul!

It was a chance also to meet NWA’s general manager for the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, Steven Crowdey. Welcome to Cebu and many more visits to come!

If NWA had their beach bash, Cathay Pacific Airways (CX), invited their party people to a Latin happening, this time a hello-and-goodbye cocktail, at the MPPH.

Honorees were outgoing CX Cebu Manager Eddie Kong and incoming CX-Cebu OIC, Vickie Yue. Eddie, who’s already missing Cebu, was given the traditional caricature as a memento of his Cebu assignment, while Vickie, stunning in a midnight-black and silver sheath, was recipient of a matching evening bag, proudly made in Cebu, as a welcome token.

CX has indeed a lovely bevy of lady personnel, and that evening, were glamorously garbed in exotic, figure-hugging and colorful ruffles and flounces! Truly Latin!

Entertainment galore was provided by the talented and versatile On The Cover band, as we noted the VIP guests present: Cebu city Mayor Tomas Osmeña, and naturally, CX frequent flyers, travel angels, cargo agents and media friends.

As we Cebuanos warmly bid goodbye to Eddie, we likewise wish Vickie a memorable stay in our Queen City!
