Friday, September 05, 2008 Domingo’s Sunday fight to determine career
WITH a former world champion and a seasoned fighter as an opponent, World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight champion Micheal Domingo has his biggest test yet on Sept. 14 to determine the future of his professional boxing career.
Domingo will be defending his newly acquired crown against former WBO bantamweight titlist Ratanchai Sor Vorapin at the Cebu Coliseum.
ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday in an interview that if Domingo is successful against WBO no.4 contender Vorapin, he will be campaigning in the United States for big fights.
A win will also decide if Domingo deserves to fight for a world title in the future.
“This will either make or break his career. This is his biggest test. This is his stepping stone. If he wins he will be given higher level fights and hopefully a world championship fight,” said Aldeguer.
Retirement
Aldeguer is building up Domingo in the WBO wherein the current world champion is fellow Filipino Gerry “Fearless” Peñalosa. But Aldeguer has no plans on pitting Domingo against the fellow Filipino pugilist.
Aldeguer feels that the 36-year old Peñalosa will soon be retiring from boxing which would pave way for Domingo’s pursuit for the world title.
Meanwhile, Aldeguer believes that 29-year old ALA Boy is fully prepared to face the former world champion.
Training
“He is very ready. After his last fight he just rested a few days and went back to training. He is in top shape for the biggest fight of his career,” Aldeguer said.
Domingo has a professional career record of 36-14-2 with 15 KOs, while Sor Vorapin has a fight record of 73-10 with 49 KO’s.
Domingo is unbeaten in his last five fights since his upset victory against the erstwhile undefeated Miguel Roman last year, while Sor Vorapin won his last fight against a boxer listed only as Alex BS in boxrec.com since being beaten by Peñalosa last April 6. (EKA)
