Saturday, September 06, 2008 SWU battles UC for spot in top four
A CRUCIAL match-up is scheduled in today’s final round of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) basketball elimination with the University of Cebu Webmasters and Southwestern University Cobras battling for an all-important fourth place in the standing.
SWU is set to take on Don Bosco Greywolves at 4 p.m., while UV will battle the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers in the 5:30 p.m. offering.
A victory is important as it will determine which team will make it to the Top 4 in the standing and will enjoy a twice-to-beat edge going into the quarterfinal round.
SWU and UC currently sport an identical 3-3 win-loss record. SWU needs to win against DBC today to keep their bids for the Top 4 alive.
However, SWU’s chances still leans on how UC will fare in its game against USPF. They would have to call on for holy intervention for USPF to win over UC.
If both UC and SWU win in their respective matches today, UC will take the Top 4 by virtue of winner over the other rule.
SWU is up for a tough challenge today as they are going up against a still pumped-up DBC, which is still hot from a 76-68 win over USPF last Thursday night. This win cemented DBC in the No. 6 rank, no matter what the outcome of their game today.
DBC arranged a quarterfinal showdown with Top 3 team University of San Carlos Warriors.
During that DBC-USP game, the Greywolved banked on the Richard Tecson and Celso Colegado for the team’s second win for the season.
Tecson slipped into the hero’s shoes when he scored the winning triple, in the final minute to break free from a close, 69-68 mark, to pad the lead, 72-68 and rode on this to the final buzzer
Moncrief Rogado remained the sole bright spot for USPF as he scored a game-high 26 points. Colegado scored 18 point to lead DBC scorers. (MCB)
