Legwork begins for Sinulog 2009

THE Sinulog Foundation Inc. is expecting more newcomers to join the 2009 Sinulog parade, as it starts sending invitations to participants.

Foundation executive director Ricky Ballesteros said many already called their office to say they are joining the Sinulog, or to send feelers.

Among those who will be in Cebu for the 2009 Sinulog, said Ballesteros, are contingents from the Boyogan Festival in Southern Leyte; Panglao, Bohol, which did not join last year; Panabo City, Davao del Norte; Dumaguete City; Bayawan City; Alikaraw, Hilongos Leyte; and Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.

Invitations were also sent to the two contingents that defeated Free Interpretation defending champion Luman Basakanon in Tacloban City’s Sangyaw Festival last June.

Ballesteros said that Mayor Tomas Osmeña wants to focus on improving the production for the television audience, for better international exposure.

Out-of-town contingents who have joined the Sinulog thrice will still receive a subsidy of P100,000 from the foundation, he said. Ballesteros also said the foundation is looking for ways to improve the stage’s surface to prevent dancers from slipping when it rains. (RHM)
