UC beats USPF for 4th place

IT WOULD take more than speed to beat the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters.

UC officially copped the twice-to-beat incentive after handing the smaller and shorter University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers an emphatic 91-63 beating to finish the elimination round at fourth place.

The Webmasters and the Southwestern University Cobras were battling for fourth place and the twice-to-beat incentive going to the quarterfinal round which start today at the Cebu Coliseum.

However, despite SWU’s 93-67 win over the Don Bosco College Greywolves, that had both UC and the Cobras finishing with a 4-3 win-loss record after the elimination round, the Webmasters got the fourth place after beating SWU in their earlier encounter.

UC now holds a twice-to-beat edge over the Cobras in their quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

The Webmasters established control early as they pulled away for good after the first six minutes of the game.

UC erected a 26-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as the combined efforts of Junmar Fajardo, Kirst Edward Pao, Janssen Abella and Kevin Juliane were too much for the Panthers.

Coach Raul Latonio, tried a different strategy, using his players advantage in speed to mount a comeback that resulted to USPF outscoring the Webmasters for seven minutes of the third but coach Rhoel Gomez put up a good defensive stops that resulted to a quick 9-2 run to end the third, with UC leading ,70-43.
