Monday, September 08, 2008 No-work holiday in Cebu, mass for Osmeña Day rites
A MASS and a short program will be held to commemorate the 130th birth anniversary of the late president Sergio Osmeña Sr. tomorrow morning.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña will lead government officials, civic groups, students and fellow Cebuanos in a tribute to his grandfather at the marker at the corner of Lapu-Lapu St. and Osmeña Blvd.
A member of the Osmeña clan is also expected to deliver a message during the program.
Declared by Republic Act 6953 as a non-working holiday in Cebu City, Cebu Province and its component cities, Sept. 9 each year is also a special public working holiday in the rest of the country.
As stated in the Labor Code, those who will report to work on a special non-working holiday, including Osmeña Day, are entitled to an additional 30 percent of their basic pay.
Classes in all public and private elementary, secondary and tertiary schools in all cities and the rest of the province will also be suspended.
Also known as Cebu’s Grand Old Man, Don Sergio’s 42 years in public service began in 1904, when he served as Cebu’s youngest governor at 25.
Four years later, he became speaker of the First Philippine Assembly.
Don Sergio also became senator and was elected vice president in 1935. Following the death of president Manuel Quezon in 1944, Don Sergio assumed the presidency. (LCR)
