Monday, September 08, 2008 Favorites in semis; UV buries CEC, 150-40
FAVORITES University of the Visayas Green Lancers and the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars sailed through the next round after beating their lower seeded counterparts in the quarterfinal round of the 2008 Cesafi Basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
The Lancers allowed the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats to take control in the first three minutes of the game before cruising to a 71-44 win to book the first semifinal ticket.
Not to be outdone, the Jaguars sailed through the victory after a 2-all deadlock at the eight-minute mark of the first for a high-scoring 106-74 victory for the second semifinal slot.
Two more semifinal slots will be filled this Tuesday when No.3 University of San Carlos Warriors play No.6 Don Bosco College Greywolves at 4 p.m. and No.4 finisher University of Cebu Webmasters take on No.5 Southwestern University Cobras in the main game at 5.
In the high school action, the UV Baby Lancers recorded the most lopsided win in recent history, beating the hapless Cebu Eastern College Dragons by 110 points, 150-40, to book the first semifinals slot in the secondary division.
Scoreless
No.2 University of Cebu Baby Webmasters were also equally merciless beating the helpless DBC Baby Greywolves, 111-68, to advance to the next round.
In the collegiate quarterfinals, the Lancers trailed 4-7 with seven minutes to play in the first, after Heroche Molero scored a basket at the 7:05 mark.
From there, UV held the Wildcats scoreless while scoring 21 straight points before Eulogio Lamosa ended the drought with a jumper at the 29.9 mark that closed the first quarter with UV up 25-9.
The second period was equally trying for the Wildcats as they could only produce seven points as the game was already in the bag for the Lancers.
Beanpole Gregory Slaughter was the only Lancer to score in double figures with 11 while Ronel Villarba topped CIT with 20
markers.
In the main game, baskets were scarce for the Panthers as the Jaguars displayed a tough defense to launch their bid strong.
With the game already in control the Jaguars applied a full court press and by the end of first half, USJ-R was already ahead 59-29.
Marvin Duran topped USJ-R scorers with 16 points, while Arman Ponce added 12.
Jordan Bardillas topped USPF with 15 and Moncrief Rogado finished with 10 as the Panthers ended their season with another disappointing finish. (RCM)
