UNIVERSITY of Cebu’s Carl Jeannette Malazarte is making record-breaking feats look easy.
A day after resetting his own mark in the 1,500-meter run, Malazarte slashd almost a minute from the steeple chase record after finishing at 10 minutes 58.93.
The old mark of 11 minutes 55 was set by Gilbert Luterte, also of UC in 2001.
This is Malazarte’s second record breaking feat in two days. In day one, he broke his 4:38 mark in the 1,500 meter run set last year with his 4:30 finish this year.
Malazarte said his daily afternoon practices has finally paid off with his two records.
Final chance
“I won a silver in the Palarong Pambansa but given the chance, I want to win the gold since this is my last year,” said Malazarte, who added that his campaign in the Milo Olympics ended on a memorable note since he has two records.
UC now has a total of 14 gold medals, six silvers and 5 bronzes, while the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation moved from fourth to second place with two golds, three silvers and one bronze and the Don Carlos Gothong MNHS is at third with two gold medals and a lone bronze.
In the elementary division, the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits kept the lead with three gold, three silvers and a single bronze, just two silver medals ahead of second placer Quiot Elementary School.
Cebu Insitute of Technology is third with two gold, five silvers and five bronzes.
Aside from Malazarte, the other gold medalists for UC yesterday were Vlessica Jagna in the girls 800 meter run and 3,000 meter steeple chase; Sarah Mae Napoles in the girls long jump; Junrey Andales in the boys 400 meter hurdle; Jee Ann Racoma in the girls 400-meter and 110-meter hurdles; Jasper Basister in the boys discuss throw and Leslie Abad for girls discuss throw.
On the other hand, Roice Kent Jardin of University of San Carlos, Divine Grace Hisola of Guadalupe, Ivan Castaneda of Gothong all won gold medals for the long jump event while Mirlou Baring of San Nicholas Elementary School, Ana Marie Ando of Basak won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles.
Baring also grabbed a gold medal in 110/100 hurdles along with Bebs Odac of Quiot Elementary School and Clint Pila of USP-F.
In the 800-meter run Joel Andren of Mabes, Adela Canillo of Quiot Elementary School and Francis Balasco of USP-F took home the gold while Fuey Sordillas of CIT and Bera Saracena of USC also won the gold in the discuss throw event.
Meanwhile, gold medal winners in the 200 meter run were Vincent Soria of Talamban Elementary School for the elementary boys; Carmela Quijano of Sacred Heart School-Hijas for the elementary girls; Marc Agdasin of University of Southern Philippines-Foundation for the secondary boys; and Emilyn Lastimoso of Abellana National School for the secondary girls.
Lastimoso ended a long gold medal drought of ANS which used to be a powerhouse in athletics.
In the Boys secondary division football Blessed John Seminary won against Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion-Mandaue, 3-1; USP-F defeated Paref-Springdale, 1-0, Bright Academy edged Cebu City National Science High School, 4-3 and Don Bosco College crushed Center for International Education, 5-1.
In the elementary division DBC flattened Cebu International School, 6-1; SHS-J trampled Bright Academy, 8-0 and City Central School beat Lapu-Lapu, 3-1. (EKA)
