Fajardo vs. Slaughter in Cesafi All-Stars

THE battle of the giants will be the crowd-drawer for this weekend’s All-Star Games of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) as celebrated centers Junmar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter anchor the two teams competing in the weekend spectacle.

By the power of the right of suffrage, University of Cebu’s 6-foot-9 pivot man Fajardo and the University of the Visayas’ 6-foot-11 tower Slaughter, were voted by fans to lead the Dark and Light teams competing in the All-Star weekend.

Fajardo will lead the Dark team, where he will join the other players voted to be in the starting five namely Armand Ponce, Luther Justiniani and Jan Malinao of University of San Jose Recoletos and UC’s Edward Pao.

They will be joined by USPF’s Randy Avila, Don Bosco’s Rodulfo Enterina and Celso Colegado, USJR’s Jabe Delfino and Lyndon Gudez.

Slaughter, on the other hand, will lead the Light squad, where he will be joined by fellow Lancers Von Lañete and Junjun Lasala and Southwestern University stalwarts Alfred Belande and Clifford Maguate in the first five.

Completing the lineup are University of San Carlos’ Joven Cortes, Giovanni Padillo, Emel Rowe and Mike Cantonao and UV’s Chris Diputado, Bonifer Sendrijas and Harold Cincoflores.

For the fans

Since the All-Star weekend is all about the supporters, Cesafi gave the fans the power to put in their favorite players in the first five of the teams through a voting system.

The Light team will be coached by UV’s Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, while USJ-R’s head coach Edito Salacot will call the shots for the Dark squad.

Apart from the game, there will also be a three-point shootout, where Cesafi’s best battle a much-hyped, three-point king Chester Cokaliong.

Cantonao, Lañete, Belande, Lyndon Gudez, Jansen Abella, Don Bosco’s Ricmar Perturbos and USPF’s Jeffrey Laurente will be gunning for the honors.

There will also be the usual slamdunk competition.

In the absence of last year’s champion, Eric Zanoria, the title is up for grabs among Slaughter, Rowe, Junjun Lasala of UV, Pao and Kevin Quilantang of UC, Abulaiz Sulaiman of USJ-R and Elwin Durano of USP-F.

Meanwhile, UC’s Junmar Fajardo was named the Cesafi Player of the Week after leading the Webmasters to two wins last week. The giant from Pinamungahan, Cebu, averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks in their wins over CIT and USPF. (MCB)
