Tuesday, September 09, 2008 Only 300 runners join Don Sergio Osmeña run
ONLY 300 runners signed up for the Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. (DSOS) 10K run today.
Cebu City Sports Commission Administrative Officer Raul Manawatao told Sun.Star Cebu that only 300 runners had signed up for the cash-rich road race that is organized to commemorate the 130th birth anniversary of Cebu’s Grand Old Man Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. – the patriach of the powerful Osmeña clan.
“Our target group was the running clubs of Mepz (Mactan Export Proccessing Zone) where we can easily gather at least 200 runners. But since the race is not on Sunday, we only drew a few of them,” said Manawatao.
However, despite the slow turnup, the 2008 DSOS Run is a star-studded race—at least on the distaff side.
According to Manawatao, Leiszl Getaruelas will be the runner to watch and together with Merlita Arias, Madelyn Carter, the Cebuanos will try to defend their turf against the out-of-town runners led by Mary Grace Diaz of Iligan City who will try to snatch the P12,000 top prize.
“I expect a tough competition. Cebu runners will be defending their home against out-of-town runners. We have registered runners from Davao, Iligan, Ormos, Bohol and Dumaguete City,” added Manawatao.
However, no big names in the men’s division showed up at press time yesterday.
Manawatao said that he had received the registration form from Philippine team member Bernardo Desamieto but he is still waiting for him to show up at the office. (RCM)
