Speak out: Pacquiao should stay away from politics By Ritchie D. Nolasco Banilad, Cebu City
RECENTLY, famed boxer Manny Pacquiao announced his planned retirement next year, which is understandable considering how rich and successful he already is.
What is disgraceful, however, was his decision to run again in the 2010 elections, a move solidified by his joining the Kampi party.
I know I will be bashed for this, but I must say that Pacman never learned the lesson from his disgraceful defeat to Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio in 2007.
In that election, the people correctly rejected him because, in reality, we do not need useless idols or celebrities as leaders.
Whether we like it or not, traditional and idealistic reformers are more capable leaders in politics.
Pacquiao simply fits nowhere since he has no real platform of governance, not to mention that he has no integrity!
In short, he has no place in government and his loss signified the victory of people who want real leadership.
Even if he has the President's political backing, Pacman will be ruined even before the election begins.
Worse, even if he wins his upcoming fight with Oscar de la Hoya, he will still lose in the 2010 elections.
Mr. Pacquiao, if you are reading this, just retire quietly and avoid politics at all costs!
By learning from your big mistake in 2007, you will be respected by us.
Please keep in mind that famous sportsmen like Michael Jordan, Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Bird never got involved in politics.
And if you really want to help Filipinos, don't do an Erap!
Do a Warren Buffet and a Bill Gates instead...do philanthropy!
