Slaughter powers Light team in All-Star game

IT WAS truly a battle of giants and this time 6-foot-11 behemoth center Greg Slaughter lifted the Light All Star team to over the Dark All Star team in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.(Cesafi) All-Star game yesterday at the crowded Cebu Coliseum.

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers’ Slaughter had an emphatic performance scoring 22 points leading the Light All Star team, composed of players from UV, University of San Carlos Warriors and Southwestern University Cobras to a 76-72 victory in the only game of the season where the best Cebuano college cagers play together.

On the other hand, his opposite the 6-foot-9 University of Cebu Webmasters’ center Junmar Fajardo was as impressive with 18 points but fouled out with 2:21 to go.

Slaughter also had help from Emil Rowe, who scored nine points, Von Lanete and SWU’s Clifford Maguate who scored seven points apiece.

The Light team exercised a commanding lead most of the game before Fajardo and Edward Pao, who scored nine points, and Luther Justiniani, who added seven points, shaved it to just four points, 71-67.

But before they could catch up Fajardo unexpectedly ended his match prematurely after coming his final foul against Slaughter under the baseline.

Without Fajardo in the court, Pao took over the offensive duty and scored from beyond the arc with just 22.5 seconds to make it 73-70.

However, with missed three point shots the Dark team had no option but to foul and the Light team converted their free throw shots for the 76-72 win.

After the game, Slaughter was awarded with the Most Valuable Player award and was also declared as named to the Mythical Five along with Lanete, Justiniani, Rowe and Fajardo.

Light All-Stars(72)— Slaughter 22, Rowe 9, Lanete 7, Maguate 7, Hermosa 6, Cantonao 6, Lasala 4, Cortes 4, Joven 2, Padillo 2. Dark All-Stars (72)— Fajardo 18, Pao 9, Delfino 9, Justiniani 7, Ponce 6, Enterina 3, Abella 2, Quilantang 2, Godez 2, Malinao 2, Amores 2, Collegado 1. (EKA)
