Thursday, September 18, 2008 Toral: Becoming an authority By Janette Toral Digital Filipino
REGARDLESS of what field we are in, we all have chances of becoming an authority. It will take time to establish that but those who are competitive may get there much sooner.
Here are some strategies to enhance one’s competitiveness that I learned from experience:
If a lot of people are in the field that you are in, such as blogging or e-commerce, identify the area where you are good at and can stand out. With this done, you can create a strategy on how to attain the goals you have in mind.
Profiles can be built by developing relevant content and networking with the right people or groups that belong in that area, either as a consumer or provider. Having an online presence is no longer an option. It is a must to have one where your profile, content, and expertise are posted.
Relevant communication of your content must be done in a sustained manner. Strive to equate your name with high quality or expert in that field. This can be helped further by participating in social networks and forum.
Depending on how savvy your audience is, your content may naturally get submitted to social media sites or linked in various blogs. Otherwise, find a way to reach out to this audience. If you are successful, your engine rankings will go up.
In addition to online activities, participating in face-to-face meetings is also important. Becoming an expert resource speaker, supporting an advocacy and attending industry events are just some of the ways to achieve this.
When you are approached for possible service or product requirements, I recommend that you have a standard starter package in mind so that it won’t take so much resource to try out your offering. Fast turn-around time is important. You should have this thought out now than later. Recognize also other players in the field as to be recognized by an industry peer; even competition, means a lot. This may also open avenues for collaboration.
If applicable, also create your own products, which are customized to what you see as the needs of the market, such as coming up with trainings, reports, books, services and items, among others.
I also find it helpful to maximize various online social networks to keep in touch and interact with readers, followers and prospective or past customers.
If you have substantial content, another alternative is to create your own group, forum or social network.
There are many alternatives, possibilities and choices that you can consider to become an authority in the field you are in. Either you follow the normal path that others have taken or pick a different strategy.
For example, instead of people paying you to attend a training you’re conducting, you can pay them instead to participate.
How you’ll do it while still generating revenue is part of the challenge of coming up with a niche. It will certainly ensure your position as an authority.
