A REMATCH with World Boxing Organization super flyweight titleholder Fernando “Chochulito” Montiel (37-2-1, 28 KOs) will have to wait because Z “The Dream” Gorres (28-2-2, 15 KOs) will first be battling veteran Puerto Rican knockout artist Jose “Carita” Lopez (37-7-2, 31 KOs) for the interim WBO super flyweight crown in the undercard of the Hatton-Malignaggi fight card on Nov. 22 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Golden Boy Promotions and ALA Promotions have been closely talking about Gorres’ future and the direction they want to take for the 26-year-old ALA fighter is to fight the veteran Lopez for the interim title.
“We are talking seriously about it. This fight will most likely happen,” said ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer in an interview by Sun.Star Cebu, yesterday.
In the past few weeks, Montiel showed his willingness to fight Gorres in a rematch. However, ALA Promotions never received a formal negotiation from Montiel’s promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions.
Aldeguer believes that Monteil is having a hard time making the 115 pound weight limit and will inevitably rise to the bantamweight category. If that happens, the interim champion will be automatically hailed the proper champion.
“It is confirmed that Montiel is going to move up and if he moves up and Z will win against Lopez, then he will become the world champion,” told Aldeguer.
Aldeguer admits that Gorres isn’t getting any younger and there will be a point in his professional boxing career that he will be bound to move to the next division and at that moment a Gorres-Montiel rematch will surely happen.
“If Z wins then he could defend the title a few times and then move up to the bantamweight division and fight Montiel. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone. Go through Lopez first and win the championship then fight Montiel later in the higher weight division,” said Gorres’ handler. “We will always want to fight Montiel in the future,” assured Aldeguer.
Gorres lost to Montiel last year in a controversial split decision at the Cebu City Sports Complex. (EKA)
