Tuesday, September 23, 2008 USJ-R Jaguars face UC in semis Game 1
THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars waited for years to get back into the title round of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. and this time they are just one stop away.
However, before they could even begin plotting their course for the title, they need to dispose the University of Cebu Webmasters first in Game 1 of their best-of-three
semifinals series at the Cebu Coliseum tonight at 6:45.
The Jaguars will be banking on its outgoing seniors, among them Manny Gabas, Jan Malinao, Luther Justiniani, Randy Pogoy and Armand Ponce, to lead their charge against the Webmasters, who will be leaning mostly on the inside presence of its towering pivot man Junmar Fajardo.
Fajardo, the 6-foot-9 center, will be assisted by UC’s newest finds, rookies Kevin Quilantang and Edward Pao.
UC head coach Rhoel Gomez will also be leaning heavily on Jansen Abella, Kelvin Juliane and Laurence Agas.
With eight of its players playing on their last year, the Jaguars are aiming to end their collegiate basketball career with a Cesafi title and with a battle-tested crew, they are considered the best bets to face if not dethrone University of the Visayas Green Lancers for the title this year.
The Lancers currently lead their own semifinal series against the University of San Carlos, 1-0. (MCB)
