Thursday, September 25, 2008 Coaches told: settle differences first, avoid media
AFTER having been disappointed for the cancellation of the volleyball competitions of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), the volleyball coaches, instead, received a lashing from Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy.
“They can no longer talk about anything negative about Cesafi. We are only trying to protect the league,” Tiukinhoy said after his meeting with the volleyball coaches yesterday.
“We can always settle differences among ourselves. Let us not go to the media for that it will only cause disagreement. We are all one in our objectives so we have to work together,” Tiukinhoy said.
The coaches were quoted in various newspapers of their disappointment of the cancellation of the games. After months of training, and after weeks of getting hyped for the start of the competitions, they were suddenly informed the night before the opening, that it was canceled.
After the dust settled, Tiukinhoy said that they were able to come to an agreement that there is a need to put up a pool of referees for volleyball, which is being done in basketball.
Postponed
Cesafi volleyball was postponed last Saturday after failing to contact referees to officiate the games. The opening was reset this weekend and will be held at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym.
As opposed to basketball, Cesafi finds it hard to look for officials because they refuse to spend too much on referees.
Coaches wanted to tap the services of Cebu Volleyball Association, but Cesafi declined because they found the fees to be too steep.
Tiukinhoy also explained their stand regarding basketball.
“We only get officiating, whose fees are reasonable. Even in basketball, which can operate on its own because it is income generating because of the gate sales,” Tiukinhoy said.
The volleyball and other events, get their funding from the registration fees paid for by the school. (MCB)
