Cesafi volleyball, Guv Cup Cluster 1 open today

AFTER a week of postponement, the 2008 season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) volleyball competition finally opens shop today at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gymnasium.

The games, which was supposed to open last week, was postponed at the last minute when they failed to get referees.

However, in a meeting with coaches, Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said that they came up with a solution that will finally address the problem on the shortage of officiating officials.

Tiukinhoy said that they will be forming a pool of volleyball referees, who will be available whenever Cesafi needs officiating for volleyball.

Today, most sought-after player, Danika Gendrauli, will be debuting in the college division today, as she dons the Southwestern University jersey.

Gendarauli, who was named the Universal Player for the 2007 Shakeys Girls national finals, will do just that for SWU when they face University of Cebu this morning.

Grandslam champion University of San Jose Recoletos will finally open its bid for a rare four-peat in the women’s division this morning.

USJ-R head coach Grace Antigua will be banking on former RP team members Genie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon.

The men’s action takes place in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women starts its cluster eliminations with Cluster 1 in Minglanilla.

Battling for Cluster 1 title are Minglanilla, San Fernando, Sibonga, Argao, Dalaguete and Alcoy. (MCB)
