Costanilla: New Stylistics concert
By Sam Costanilla
Spotlight

CEBUANO fans of the New Stylistics, like me, should not miss their concert here next month. My good friend Beth David of Tagged Events says Russel Thompkins Jr., the original lead vocalist, will surely delight the crowd with his impeccable falsetto voice.

* * *

SO let’s not go elsewhere as all roads lead to Waterfront Cebu City Hotel in Lahug on Oct. 25 for this major musical event. I understand that from Cebu, Thompkins and the New Stylistics will proceed to Manila and other key cities as part of their Philippine concert tour. Tickets are now available at the Waterfront Hotel lobby, SM City Cebu and Ayala Center customer service.

THE Cebu Chamber Singers (CCS) is now ready to entertain the music-loving public in a fund-raising show on Oct. 11 at SM City cinema 1. The group is asking all of us to watch this concert because its cash is not yet enough for its flight to South Korea in November. There, CCS will represent Cebu in a major international choral singing competition with big cash prizes at stake.

THIS writer is endorsing this fund-raising show to all of you. I assure you that you will have a musically enriching and delightful concert — plus the fact that your watching it is actually supporting this award-winning group travel to South Korea for a noble cause. I heard that tickets to the Oct. 11 show are selling like hotcakes, so if you and your friends are intending to buy some, call or text me (cell phone number 09268443888) right now. Or try Dennis Muzikhauz’s cell phone number 09228556132.

TOMORROW, Tuesday, there will be a by-invitation-only dinner to formally close the Cebu Press Freedom Month celebration. The dinner will be hosted by the Cebu Association of Media Practitioners Inc., which is headed by Jun Alcover and yours truly, president and vice president, respectively. Only the officers of Camp Inc., Sukna and KBP-Cebu are invited to the party.

ANOTHER e-mail I got is from Jamie Gellor, event coordinator of the 3 Men Productions and a third year marketing communications student of the University of Asia and the Pacific in Ortigas. Gellor wrote that on Oct. 18, two of Manila’s most sought-after bands will perform in a show titled Rock n’ Fashion at Paseo Food and Entertainment Center in Mabolo.

BELIEVE it or not, but this really happened two weekends ago at an uptown hotel here. This media club did its oath-taking ceremony with the Vice Mayor as guest of honor and speaker. After his speech, the lady emcee asked those who attended the event to stand for the National Anthem and the prayer.

Apparently, she forgot that all programs should start with a prayer, with the singing of the National Anthem right after. That’s the proper sequence: prayer first, then the anthem.

* * *

AS if to aggravate the blunder, a female dancer in a very sexy getup was called at random to lead the singing of the anthem. My goodness — that was not supposed to happen. Another person in a more formal dress should have been asked to come forward and lead the singing of the anthem to add some solemnity to the occasion.

* * *

WHEN the oath-taking proper took place, some individuals who came to the gathering became “instant” inductees.

Obviously, the media club leader has no co-officers and members because, in the first place, there was no election held.

What was funny, if not insulting, was the participation of those “instant” inductees in an oath-taking ceremony that was ill-prepared. The club leader simply requested those guests to rise and take their oath with him and they did! No, I’m not saying that that was a sham induction.

* * *

THIS aging radioman is moving heaven and earth to have the name of the former president of a local media club deleted from the roster of officers. Of course, the radioman’s effort would never succeed because the former president’s name and two-year reign can never be erased by whatever means.
