Cebu softball seeks support

CEBU softball has hit the bottom again.

After experiencing a good run, resulting to a first-ever national softball title in 2007, Cebu softball is struggling again.

Dionisio Bacarisas’ Cebu’s leading softball organizer has complained about the lack of support for the game.

“I fear that it would lead to another dry year for softball. Nobody wants to sponsor any (softball) tournament nowadays,” Bacarisas told Sun.Star Cebu.

The last tournament that Bacarisas organized was the Vice-Governor Gregory Sanchez Cup that ended last April.

“One good thing is some LGUs are still keen on organizing or helping softball but the problem is it is only for Class B players,” Bacarisas said.

Sibonga hosted a softball tournament for Class B and Talisay City is currently holding a tournament for the same class.

“The problem is that our Class A players, which consists of former RP team members, commercial and varsity players, suffered because of the lack of competition. And this class is where we get our players for the national competition,” Bacarisas said.

Currently there are only six teams in the Class A level and among them only three are truly dominating the game.

Cebu City councilor and the committee of games, amusement and sports chairman Slyvan “Jack” Jakosalem has been looking for a patron to be the director to handle batted sports at the Cebu City Sports Commission.

Jakosalem has actively supported softball but the lack of a sports director who will carry the voice of the sports in the CCSC made it hard for batted sports to be included in the calendar of activities of the CCSC. (RCM)
