Friendship run kicks off Oct. 5

RUNNERS from all over Cebu are given the avenue to unite in the name of the sport that they all love—running—as the second edition of the Friendship Run blasts off this Sunday at the Cebu Business Park.

The marathon was originally structured to cater to the growing number of runners in Cebu and after a successful debut, organizers are making a second staging of the race, which was launched yesterday at Laguna Garden Café.

“We want to strengthen the camaraderie among the runners’ clubs in Cebu. After an overwhelming response last year, we deemed it necessary to hold a second race,” said organizer Loida Genova yesterday.

The race also happens to double as a charity run with the proceeds from the registration going to its beneficiary—the Kadasig Parents Association.

The race will feature events in the 10 kilometer, 5K and 3K runs.

The participants are expected to double this year with more groups signifying their intent to join, while Don Bosco College will be fielding high school students to the the 3K division.

Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (Safe) head Joel Baring said that apart from DBC, they also expect a huge crowd coming from the several running groups at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (Mepz).

“Because they have always been supportive of this sport, we have decided to put a separate division for Mepz runners,” Baring said.

Meanwhile, expecting to defend their titles in the premier 10K divisions are inaugural Friendship Run champions Eugene Delposo and Leszl Gitaruelas.

Registrations are still accepted at the Cebu City Sports Center with the fee pegged at P150. (MCB)
