Tormis pulls off twinkill in Jawad Cup tourney

PALARONG Pambansa gold medal winner Dannel Jay Tormis stamped his class in the 17th Jawad Cup when he won two titles in different age divisions last weekend at the Elizabeth Mall Activity Center.

Tormis, the table tennis stalwart of the University of Cebu, collected the title in the Boys 12 division and in an older category, the Boys 17.

In the Boys 12, Tormis disposed Bacolod City’s Edmund Garganian of Lopue Table Tennis Association (Loptta) for the title.

Taking third place is Jean Philippe Honoridez of Colegio del Sto. Niño. Tormis and Honoridez are the gold medal winners in the team event competition of the Palarong Pambansa.

In the Boys 17 division, Tormis shamed older counterparts winning over Carlos Bernados of University of San Carlos for the title.

Meanwhile, UC pulled off a 1-2 finish in the Girls 17 division with compatriots Elonna Dane Tormis and Marian Ycot fighting for the title, which eventually went to Tormis, shaming Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Benjielyn Dayap of Loptta, who settled for the bronze.

It was a different scenario in the Girls 12 division as Loptta’s Beverly Paulma and Shamiela Pineda took the Top 2 spots with UC’s Gracielle Suico salvaging the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, former national team members Marell La–gunday of Loptta and Manila’s Julius Esposo of Hua Ching Foundation asserted their dominance, when they topped in their respective classes in the open division. (MCB)
