AFTER basketball, De Lasalle Universty and Ateneo University will once again rekindle the flame of their rivalry as the alumni and alumna of the rival schools compete against each other in the seventh De Lasalle and Ateneo Golf Classic on Nov. 12 and 13 at the Cebu Country Club.
The two-day tournament will showcase the regular tournament, in Day 1, and the Ryder Cup format, on Day 2.
There will also be a President’s match, where school presidents Javi Quintos of DLSU and Tony Pineda of Ateneo will be pitted against each other in golf supremacy.
On the other hand, Quintos believes that this friendly tournament’s sole purpose is to strengthen the bond between the two schools.
“The rivalry is there but it’s a healthy rivalry. We respect each other. This is our way to generate camaraderie for both schools,” said Quintos in a press conference at Casino Español yesterday.
For this year’s competition both teams have toughened up their rosters with talented alumni and alumna golfers from all around the country.
“We have national prominent players to beef up our lineups,” said Ateneo regional director Jovi Neri, who plans to take back the title from their rivals.
DLSU is the defending champions after losing to Ateneo University for five straight years since the establishment of the golf tournament.
To avenge DLSU’s loss to Ateneo in the UAAP basketball finals this year, San Remegio Vice-Mayor Nino Bascon, who is the team captain of the DLSU squad, plans to repeat last year’s feat by winning the crown.
“Because we lost in basketball we’ll try to win in golf,” he said.
This tournament is open to all Ateneo and DLSU graduates. (EKA)
