Serna: Empress Schuck, Jason Abalos in mall show
By Roger Serna: Sounds and images

THE funny and lively pair of Toni Gonzaga and dancer-turned-comedian-singer Vhong Navarro —whom we saw together in a film shown not too long ago — bounces back on the wide screen in a hilarious and at the same time touching film entitled My Only U and directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.

JSP Ads & Promo’s Josie Pereyra says that while the film boasts of its funny storyline, which includes the duo’s adventures and misadventures, there are also touching moments that deal with the fact that the days of the female lead star are numbered as a result of a family curse.

How do these emotions get to be mixed effectively? That’s for us to find out as the Star Cinema movie opens in Cebu movie houses on Oct. 15.

Stargazers, take note! Young stars Empress Schuck and Jason Abalos will be in town this Sunday, Oct. 5, (oh, we’re closing in on Christmas that fast, huh!) as Gaisano Country Mall’s celebrity guests for its month-long anniversary celebration.

They’ll make a side trip to Balamban for a mini-show at 2:30 p.m. and will have another one at the mall’s parking area at 8:30 p.m. Get to see them up close and personal, and even get to sing or dance with them onstage if you get lucky to be picked from the crowd.

The group which popularized the songs like You Make Me Feel Brand New, Stone In Love With You, You Are Everything, I Can’t Give You Anything and others will be in town on Oct. 25 (a Saturday) at the Pacific ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.

You guessed it right! It’s Russell Thompkins Jr. & The New Stylistics in “The Real Deal show,” which boasts of having the
original lead singer and the original sound.

Show starts at 8 p.m. Be on time to fully appreciate the entire show.

“Experience Life!” That’s not just an ordinary invitation for us to live life to the fullest. It’s actually the theme of this year’s edition of the “Beauty, Health and Wellness Show,” which will be held at the Activity Center of Ayala Center Cebu on Nov. 13-16.

The activity is spearheaded by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce & Industry headed by Dr. Edward Gaisano in partnership with PhilExport Cebu, the Spa and Wellness Association of Cebu (Swac) and Ayala Center Cebu and in cooperation with the Cebu Health & Wellness Council.

It had its launching and MOA signing with partners at the Laguna Garden Café last Sept. 24, which featured a mini fashion show featuring some models of the newly formed RJ Warm Bodies.

Alibyo Boutique Spa, owned by Swac prexy Johnie Lim, presented the traditional hilot (a massage the spa specializes) in a dance form performed by the spa’s therapists.

The participation of practically all types of enterprises that promote a healthy lifestyle make the involved parties so sure that all guests in the exhibition will achieve the theme which is, again, “Experience Life!”

For the second time in a row, Sounds & Images (S&I) actively participated in some of the activities during the Press Freedom Week celebration.

As mentioned in last week’s column, we had so much fun in the parade from the Ayala Center Cebu grounds to the Provincial Capitol where the opening rites, sponsored by Smart Philippines, were held.

The same fun and excitement was felt during the Globe Telecom sponsored “Denim Ball.” It was held at the Arctic Room of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. Unfortunately, in both events, I went home empty-handed in the raffles.

The culminating activity was held at the Holiday Plaza Hotel ballroom and was sponsored by San Miguel Corporation. S&I delineated the role of Gabby Concepcion in his headline-grabbing spat with his manager Rose Flaminiano.

The skit entry of the E-Group came out hilarious not because of its substance and delivery but because of the flaws brought about by having no rehearsals at all. Sigh. Better luck next time? Another sigh, but with high hopes.

Before the contest proper, somebody approached and congratulated me for having performed a better Elvis Presley act than last year. Really? I thought my act was a Ricky Martin! Ha-ha!

In fairness, my friend Raffy Uytiepo of The Freeman did a convincing impersonation of the king of rock and roll with the hip movements, sideburns and all during the opening day of the celebration. The common denominator in our performances was the all-white attire. Nothing more.
