Monday, October 06, 2008 Talisay mayor blames critics for ‘controversy’
TALISAY City Mayor Socrates Fernandez is blaming his political detractors for sowing controversies against him and his administration.
In his radio program over radio station dyRF last Friday night, Fernandez accused the opposition bloc of hurling issues against him to taint his reputation.
But Johnny V. delos Reyes, a businessman who ran against but lost to Fernandez in last year’s elections, said the mayor has no one to blame but himself for the peace and order problems in the city.
In Cebuano, the former candidate asked: “Were his political opponents the ones who shot a PUJ driver, jeepney conductor and three others? Were we the ones who threatened to blow up a Petron gasoline station and illegally detained and mauled vulcanizing shop boys? Were we the ones who told his son Joavan to have himself hacked in Tanke?”
He advised the mayor to improve the image of the city, which is now described in jokes as “Talikay” (from the Cebuano “likay”, meaning “to avoid”).
Delos Reyes is also supporting calls to have Fernandez recalled.
As for those who are blaming Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu Province, first district) for the situation in Talisay, delos Reyes said the congressman and Fernandez’s political backer has nothing to do with the mayor’s refusal to do something about the abuses being blamed on Joavan.
