USJ-R beats USC in Cesafi volleyball

DEFENDING men’s champion University of San Carlos suffered its first setback in the volleyball competitions of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) after bowing to former big guns University of San Jose Recoletos yesterday at the University of the Visayas gym.

USJ-R, which had a long rest since their last game the other week, exploited their opponent’s frailty. USC had a busy day last Saturday and USJ-R made easy work of the champion, 25-13, 25-18, 25-21, to put their comeback bid in high gear.

The USC Warriors had very little rest. They had a late game last Saturday, where they needed four sets before escaping University of the Visayas and they went up against a well-rested USJ-R first thing yesterday morning.

“Ingun ana man gyud na. The guys were tired because we played in the final game late Saturday afternoon and had an early schedule today (yesterday),” Labuga said.

Two years ago, USJ-R was gunning for a three-peat in the Cesafi, when USC, then with new coach Norvie Labuga, hampered the bid in the finals.

As of the moment, USJ-R maintains a clean slate in the men’s division with a 3-0 win-loss record.

Meanwhile, last year’s runnerup University of Southern Philippines Foundation defeated Cebu Institute of Technology, 25-12, 25-14, 25-21, to still be on the running for the top spot, while UV defeated UC, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22. (MCB)
