AFTER losing its first game in the opening week of the 11th Aboitiz Cup, University of Southern Philippines-Foundation Alumni FC bounced back and scored an upset against the fancied Sambag 1, 1-0, yesterday at the University of San Carlos-Technology Center football field.
USP-F Alumni FC scored the only goal of the match after Steve Ko struck in the sixth minute of regulation on a counterattack.
USP-F Alumni FC lost to Don Bosco United FC, 4-1 last week while Sambag 1 triumphed over Queen City United (QCU) 2-0 and both teams are now tied in the standings with one win and one draw.
Despite the score, it was Sambag 1, made up players from the former champion Hiroshi with a few reinforcements like former RP training pool mainstay Oliver Colina, which was on the attack for most of the match with USP-F rarely getting to the other side of the field.
In the final minutes of the game, USP-F keeper Benjamin Sanchez kept Sambag 1 from scoring with two diving saves, while their defense was content to kick the ball out of bounds to waste time to preserve the upset.
Meanwhile, QCU drew with the visiting Tagbilaran team, 4-4.
Jimmy Oclarit of Tagbilaran drew first blood with a goal in the 15th minute of the game then Jason Cempron added another goal for Tagbilaran in the 40th minute for a 2-0 lead over QCU.
However, QCU retaliated two minutes later with a strike by Jose Mari Colmenaros to reduce the lead to 2-1.
Point
In the second half, Jack Reston scored another goal for QCU to tie the game at 2-2 before Oclarit scored twice more for a 4-2 count.
However, Queen City was able to salvage a point with goals by Reston and Jake Acre for the 4-4 tally.
In the third Men’s League match San Roque Royal United drew with San Roque FC (SRFC), 1-1.
Ryan Bordalba scored for SRFC in the 30th minute, while SRRU’s Sheldon Colina tied the game with a goal in the 90th minute.
Meanwhile, QCU won against Army in a lopsided 15-0 match in the 38-above division.
Cebu Football Association President Richard Montayre led the pack with four goals, while Wilson Uang and Wilfredo Caballero scored two goals apiece.
Age groups
CebuFA board member Raffy Musni, Renato Yap, Jun Oano, Ireneo Cabilla, Penny, Marvin Baring and Jan Nacional contributed a goal each.
In the age group, Cebu International School crushed SRFC 2, 5-0; Colegio dela Inmaculada Concepcion-Mandaue held back Sacred Heart-Jesuits 1, 4-0; and SRFC 1 trampled Maria Montessori International School, 9-0, in Boy 12 category at the Paref-Springdale football pitch.
In the Boys 14 division, Bright Academy defeated Blessed John XXIII Seminary (BJS) ,1 3-0; Don Bosco Technology Center 1 drew with Abellana National School/ Pomeroy, 2-2, and DBTC 2 pounded BSJ 2, 5-0. (EKA)
