6 children lose father, ask Sulpicio for P19M

SIX children are now without a father after the June 21 sinking of Sulpicio Lines’ mv Princess of the Stars.

The children, through their mother Maria Logroño, are the 23rd group of complainants in a civil suit against Sulpicio Lines Inc. (SLI). They lost their father Romulo Logroño, a seaman for 20 years.

Romulo was earning $1,648 a month.

The Logroños, based in Tagbilaran City in Bohol, are asking for P19,191,680 in actual, moral and exemplary damages plus a 20 percent award to the Public Attorney’s Office, which is handling all the SLI damage suits.

Romulo had gone to Manila to process his travel papers. He then boarded the mv Princess of the Stars on June 20 to go home to Tagbilaran, with a stopover in Cebu City.

Then the tragedy struck.

Last July 14, a body was found in Magallanes, Sorsogon with identification cards that belonged to Romulo. The body is yet to undergo DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) matching.

The plaintiffs noted “negligence” when the vessel continued to sail despite the fact that the weather bureau had hoisted storm signal number three over its path. (JGA)
