Interested fields rise from 9 to 19

THE SECOND conference of the fledgling Liga Pilipinas will open tentatively on Nov. 26 with two cities eyed to host the first week of the tour elimination phase.

Butch Antonio, the league’s operation chief told Sun.Star Cebu that they are now talking with the prospective squads.

“We are expecting to wrap up these discussions in two or three weeks,” Antonio said in a text message.

From nine, applicants for new membership ballooned to 19, an unprecedented rise of interested teams for a community-based tournament.

“Honestly, we cannot accommodate all of them. We will just try to consider the strategic location first and the amenities and facilities of a certain applicant,” added Antonio.

Aside from the additional teams, Liga Pilipinas will also try to revise the tournament format to minimize the expenses of the weekly tour.

Liga Pilipinas eyed Cebu City to host the opening leg in the south and Taguig in the north.

Both the Cebu Niños and Taguig Batang Global were the first finalist of the first-ever Liga Pilipinas Finals were the Cebuanos prevailed in the best-of-five series by sweeping the series. (RCM)
