Thursday, October 09, 2008 Seares: Tomas and Mary Ann By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
HE said he won't die before 2010 because he's "too stubborn" for that.
She said she had a vision about becoming a judge after praying before the miraculous Image of Virgin Mary in Simala.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña was talking about the risk of having prostate cancer, for which he has to undergo surgery in the US.
Mary Ann Castro, an assistant prosecutor detailed with Bureau of Immigration, was referring to her rumored appointment as municipal trial court judge.
At first blush, you may think Tomas is just being true to his billing, feisty and irreverent even with mortality's tug on his sleeve. And Mary Ann is merely playing to the gallery that expects an appointee to an exalted job to say, Thank you, God.
Despite the bravado, the mayor, a regular Sunday churchgoer, could've been as scared as many devoted Catholics afflicted with serious illness.
Mary Ann, on the other hand, couldn't publicly credit her talent (proven) or her admirers (alleged) for her good fortune of having been nominated to bigger positions in government. True, she's facing a number of complaints before the ombudsman and her appointments are routinely being opposed.
Yet someday, those who oppose her, including Tomas, might find themselves addressing Mary Ann "your honor."
The future
Like everyone else, Tomas and Mary Ann don't know what the future holds.
Or maybe they do. Tomas already promised he'll be back to serve the rest of his term. Mary Ann already identified herself to the police in a traffic incident as "Judge Castro."
In separate crystal balls, they must see themselves getting what they want.
