UC Banilad tops Alumni Cup

THE University of Cebu-Banilad Campus bagged the 1st UC Alumni Chancellor’s Cup Inter-campus basketball league by eking out a 65-61 win over previously unbeaten GLC UC-Administrative staff Sunday at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Taking advantage the late arrival of the opponent’s vital cog, the Banilad Squad displayed exact domination and even posted a 27-8 lead at the close of the opening quarter.

Administrative’s offensive stance went puff earlier when starting center Lapena came late and nobody could fill the void, leaving former varsity player Brad Samonte to do the battle in the shaded lane.

Muana, Bontuyan and Pondar joined hands for Banilad Squad, who utilized its nine players throughout the game.

But when the going got tough, the Admin team came closer and even managed to chop the lead going into the fourth quarter, 45-40.

However, that was the best thing that the Admin could do as Samonte went to the shower early with five fouls in the third and the Banilad squad, regrouping themselves, continued to spew fire down the end to seal the win.

With the title-clinching win, the Banilad squad, under the mentorship of Theme Aguilar, went home P7,000 richer, while Admin pocketed the P5,000 cash and the runnerup trophy.

In the other game, it was a walk in the park for the Unified High School team which clinched the third place honor via default when UC-Marine Education Training Center-Mambaling Campus came in with only four players.

Meanwhile, the awarding rites and solidarity party of the two-month long tournament will be held this Sunday at the Rafols Beach Resort in Dumlog, Talisay City.

The UC Alumni Sports Association (UCASA), the organizing committee of the competition, will also announce the members of the Mythical Five and the Most Valuable Player award during the gathering.
