Saturday, October 11, 2008 UV shoots for Cesafi Juniors crown
THE battle is not over for the University of the Visayas. After a resounding win for an unprecedented eight championship streak of the UV Green Lancers last Wednesday, it is now the time for the juniors team on the pressure cooker.
The UV Baby Green Lancers are hoping to defend their title against a pesky and determined University of Cebu Baby Webmasters in the deciding Game 5 of the juniors championship at 4 p.m. today at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Baby Lancers of coach Pepito need to draw strength and inspiration from the emphatic win of their seniors counterparts in order to survive the Webmasters, who are leaning on the recently-crowned league MVP Martin Pearce.
Meanwhile, in another development, the University of San Carlos Warriors, who collared the third place honors after sneaking past the University of Cebu by a hairline, 70-69 to finish the series, 2-1 are not the only ones going to the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) zonals.
For the effort they put up, the UC Webmasters were granted a wildcard slot to the (PCCL) by league chairman Rey Gamboa.
USC will compete in the zonals in Cagayan de Oro on Nov. 14 to 16, while UC will play in Ormoc on Nov. 15 to 17, alongside Cesafi runnerup University of San Jose Recoletos.
Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said they separated UC and USC so that they will get a chance to test their mettle against different Manila opponents. Letran will play in Ormoc, while Far Eastern University will play in Cagayan de Oro.
Berths
UV claimed automatic berths to the Sweet 16 after winning the Cesafi.
Tiukinhoy also added that although the Cesafi basketball season has come to an end, they are making sure that there won’t be a long hiatus for the players as they have events lined-up until March next year.
Apart from the Champions League campaigns of the Cesafi Top 4 teams, some teams are also invited to the University Games later this month.
“In December, we will be forming a Cesafi selection team, which will take part in different competitions nationwide and we will have the Partners Cup starting January,” Tiukinhoy added. The Partners Cup will run until March.
Meanwhile, a lot of damage to properties was reported by the Cebu Coliseum officials following Game 4 of the senior’s finals last Wednesday.
Cesafi will be made to pay for the damaged seats in the Coliseum.
“People were no longer sitting but standing on the seats to hoist themselves up so they could see the game. And in one seat, two or more people will be standing. That is why the seats broke,” Tiukinhoy added. (MCB)
