UC wins Juniors title

THE University of Cebu Baby Webmasters hampered a University of the Visayas sweep in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc as they dethroned the erstwhile champion with a 104-96 win Game 5 of the finals series of the juniors division yesterday at the Cebu COliseum.

The Baby Webmasters reclaimed the Juniors title they last won in 2006 , when head coach Reggie Licanda took over as mentor.

“It is very overwhelming. I am just so overcome with happiness,” said Licanda, who jumped with joy in their win.

In the game, the Baby Green Lancers failed to ride on the momentum of the championship of their seniors counterparts last Wednesday, as the Webmasters managed to strike first to take them by surprise.

Collegiate triple MVP Greg Slaughter also dropped by to support UV. Slaughter showed he is adept on the sidelies as on the court as he showed his blatant support with a heartfelt boo whenever UC makes a shot.

UC was a few steps ahead of the Lancers and built up a 19-10 lead early in the game, which they never let go until the final buzzer announced their victory.

The Webmasters had shown so much confidence in the game that it overshadowed the Lancers.

UC managed to pad the lead to 11 in the second period, 42-31. However, Arvie Cabanero, who scored a game-high 41 points, led a furious 8-0 rally that sliced the lead down to just three, 39-42.

However, UV’s run was halted with booming back-to-back triples from MVP Martin Pearce and Roger Pogoy as UC ended the first half with a 52-41 lead.

UV once more managed to cut the lead to three points but the Webmasters easily recovered from it.

Pogoy led the UC scorers with 21 points, while Pearce added 15.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s game did not attract the same kind drama that the seniors finals had. Only a token fans came out to watch. The noise-inducing drum corps from both teams even came late. Compared to last Wednesday, the Coliseum was virtually peaceful yesterday. (MCB)
