USJ-R stays undefeated in Cesafi

THE University of San Jose-Recolotos (USJ-R) men’s and women’s volleyball teams continue to assert their dominance in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball competition after pulling off emphatic victories yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

The defending ladies champions, USJ-R, made easy work of the University of Cebu, 25-29, 25-18, 25-15, to bolster its leadership in the competition.

Its men’s team on the other hand, also pulled off an emphatic win, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16, over the UC men’s squad.

The USJ-R squad, which is raring to get back on the Cesafi throne, was powered by the incessant spikes of Ariel Carumba and Lougie Tipgos. USJ-R also had a strong frontcourt force behind the dynamic blockers Marianito Gomez, JEssriel Pino and Ken Abunda.

USJ-R currently sports a 4-0 win-loss record.

On the other hand, the USJ-R ladies barely broke into a sweat when they clobbered the hapless UC squad in three.

Head coach Grace Antigua didn’t have to use up the energy of her reliable players save for one veteran, Aina Laroga, who led the team to their fifth straight victory.

Coincidentally, Southwestern University shares the limelight with USJ-R as both have identical record following its 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 win over the University of San Carlos.

Although they won in straight set, it was not a walk in the park for the Spiking Cobras as they needed to answer the pesky advances of the USC team.

Danika Gendrauli, once more became a menacing force for SWU.

Today, Gendrauli will face her former team, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

This will be the first time, the young, talented spiker plays her former team and is looking forward to the encounter.

“It will be exciting tomorrow,” said Gendrauli, a star player of the USPF high school team, before changing schools in college.

USPF yesterday won over Cebu Doctors University, 25-14, 25-14, 25, 17. The men’s team of the Cebu Institute of Technology defeated the CDU men’s team, 25-17, 25-12. (MCB)
